Don’t undermine the role of furniture in providing healthcare treatment in hospitals

Hospitals are institutions which have the responsibility of providing health care, treatment of diseases to the patients who visit and also comfortable seating provisions for the family and friends of patients who accompany them. Hospital furniture refers to all the pieces of furniture which are used to seat, lie down human beings and units used for storage purposes.

There are some common elements in hospital further across all types like the seating required for waiting patients and their families, storage units required in the form of drawers, shelves etc.  But depending on the type of hospital- dental, eye, general, maternity etc. the requirement of furniture to support the patient would be different as it depends on the position of the patient required while giving treatment. For instance, an eye hospital would require more of sitting flexible chairs and few beds for surgeries etc. as compared to maternity hospital where the patients’ requirement is mainly of delivery beds and baby cots. Baby cots would not be required in ear/ eye/ dental clinics at all while they are required in some numbers in general clinic and huge numbers in maternity clinic. Similarly specialty furniture might be required for specialty hospitals dealing with specific diseases like trauma centre, rehabilitation centre, cancer hospital, psychiatric hospital etc.

The material used for furniture also varies, some hospitals with huge footfalls that can’t afford to hire for detailed cleaning of furniture every now and then, would prefer material which is easy to clean like steel rather than wooden or textile finished furniture. Also private hospitals that have high end clients visiting would require more luxurious furniture to cater to the target audience.
